I spent this month catching up on bookkeeping, (groan, curse, kick and scream), shipping out the Hip Deep in Bad Company audiobook to the Kickstarter supporters (with Sam’s help–woo hoo!), and reading through the first two books in the Dig Site series to make sure my final editing round on Book 3 would make the story sparkle like a disco ball (and keep you binge-readers happy-spappy).

Next month is going to be busy with awesome treats and no tricks!

I can’t wait to share Quint and Angelica’s latest adventures in the Mexican jungle with you all.

* Chicken Noodle took her first flying lesson and LOVED it. I’m not sure my heart can handle what comes next, but her future looks to involve flying high.

* Beaker is working, working, working, and saving his money to buy his first car.

* Sam just made a gorgeous flagstone path from our back door out to my office that makes me feel like playing hopscotch when I go back and forth between the house and “work.”

* I went clothes shopping for my next Deadwood-related event and am so glad that Macy’s has mirrors in the dressing rooms that make you look taller and thinner. Lordy, I loathe clothes shopping … unless it’s for more work clothes (aka pajamas).

Sam Lucky at the keys …

Things have been happening around here lately, a passing breeze, a flash in the corner of my eye when glance behind me in an attempt to catch sight of the blur and quiet flurry that moves about in the house. Papers flutter on my desk in its wake, curtains sway. Occasionally, if I listen carefully, there is a faint buzzing, or cheeping, maybe a yatter, at the edge of my senses as the phenomenon occurs. It reminds me of the Star Trek episode in which a group of aliens commandeers the Enterprise to use as a vessel to take them home, wherever that is. The aliens move so quickly that Captain Kirk and his crew can’t see them, they only hear buzzing, as if insects have invaded the ship. It’s like that. It was distressing for them, and it’s disconcerting to me.

It’s Ann, of course, busting her butt to finishing up the third book in her Dig Site Series, Chewed Up by the Jungle. It wouldn’t be such a brouhaha but for the fact that we are also preparing to set sail for Deadwood for a few book signings and talks. You can catch her there on Thursday, September 21st, at the Rapid City Public Library; then Friday, September 22nd for a History on the Lawn talk at the Adam’s House – Undertaking: a History of Coffin Joints, then Saturday the 23rd for a book signing at Chubby Chipmunk Hand Dipped Chocolates (YES, it happens to be her birthday and NO, it’s not just by chance). I’m going to keep this puppy short and sweet, because I’m almost to the big exciting moment near the end of Chewed Up by the Jungle (Book 3 in the Dig Site Mystery series), and I want to get back to the jungle with the Dig Site crew before I miss out on what happens next.

Last fall I went to a conference where I met some amazing authors who gave me all sorts of ideas on new ways to have fun with readers.

One of the intriguing discussions I sat in on was about Kickstarter campaigns and opportunities to offer cool rewards for fans.

When I came home, Mr. Lucky and I began talking about what we could offer in one of these campaigns.

An idea began to take shape–an audiobook PRE-ORDER option for fans of the Deadwood Undertaker series!

BEST OF ALL–A way to offer ownership of the actual audiobook files!

“Ownership” would allow you to load the audiobook on any device you own, no matter if it’s a product from Amazon, B&N, Apple, Samsung, or whatever. You can put it on your cell phone or your computer or wherever else you can listen to audio files.

This Kickstarter campaign would also help us to pay for a HUMAN narrator for the 5th Deadwood Undertaker book, as in JASON CULP, who narrated the previous 4 books (rather than a much cheaper AI voice version of the story).

Note–Human talent is expensive, but we feel it’s worth every penny!

HERE’S WHERE & HOW I NEED YOUR HELP…

We had to set a financial goal for the campaign ahead of time: $3000 in one month seemed like a reasonable goal.

So far, we are at 64% of this goal!

“What now, Ann?” you ask yet again.

Well, it all started last year when I began getting frustrated because I couldn’t reach those on Facebook and Instagram who’d signed up to “Follow” me there or hit “Like” on my author page. I’d write and share a post, but then behind the scenes, I’d receive a message from the Facebook “gods” that they had allowed only 50 of my “Followers” to see the post. HOWEVER, if I’d pay $100, $200, sometimes even $300 to “boost” the post, then they would show it to another 500 followers, maybe even 1000 of them.

Grrrr.

On top of that baloney sandwich, pile on the messages from the Facebook overlord saying things like, “Good job, Ann! You have been putting up quality posts. We’re going to reward you by showing the posts to another 50 of your followers for FREE!”

Double grrrr!

Then, about a month ago, news came out that Facebook had paid a book pirating site for millions of already stolen books, wanting to use them to build their AI model. They had decided that paying authors would cost too much. Now, I know there isn’t much you can do to stop the AI monster these days, but…

Triple grrrr!!!

The final pickle on the top of this crap sandwich? They want me to start using their little AI “Purple Pal” robot as a moderator in my groups to answer any questions readers/followers ask me and to interact more than I do. It will be my helper buddy, using the AI they built off stolen books.

Enough!

Now you know why I suddenly began building more on my Ann Charles YouTube channel. But I wanted to interact with those who were interested in more than just watching videos, so I started building over on Patreon, creating Ann’s Alpha Club. This will be a place where I can post fun stuff for fans of my books without having a middleman (aka Facebook, Instagram, etc) and their algorithm bouncers blocking the posts.

Below is a video (click to watch it) explaining a little more for those interested in joining me in Ann’s Alpha Club on Patreon, which you can access from your computer, tablet, or phone. There are different tiers available there–you can join for free and interact on general posts, like how Facebook used to be. It’s so much fun to be back with this crew, even though the bugs are annoying and I don’t love sleeping in tents in the jungle. Deadwood Undertaker #6 is coming.
