I recently had an interview request that requested a bio, a headshot, and … a picture of my cats. This was NOT for a pet-related blog, so I laughed out loud when I read the request.

It appears my cats are catching up with me on the social media racetrack.

I blame Loki, especially, for winning the popularity contest. Two of his pictures were voted to be in my 2026 Traveling with Ann calendar.

He’s a camera ham and comes running whenever he sees me taking pictures with my phone, including the photo above when he decided he wanted to be in one of the calendar promo shots.

Anyway, if I can train the cats to be my butler, I’ll be a go with playing second fiddle to a feline or two. And that’s a capital IF … ha ha ha ha ha.

What is the big deal with reviews?

Over the years, I have been a fortunate author-pirate.

Many kind readers have taken the time to write reviews for my books on Amazon, Goodreads, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, etc.

These reviews have lured new-to-me readers to give my books a try, which in turn makes each new release more exciting and keeps me typing away at my keyboard while new stories flow onto the pages.

It’s a wonderful circle and I am so appreciative that I can keep telling stories about my characters’ adventures year after year.

What is a Review Crew?

I decided to change things up on my author-pirate ship this year.

Instead of sharing the rewards of my adventures with those who help holler to the world about my books, I thought I’d focus on sharing pieces-of-eight treasures (aka “author swag”) with my fellow book-page travelers who leave reviews sprinkled here and there on the digital landscape (in both old lands and new worlds),

In short, if you leave a review for one of my books somewhere, I’ll throw your pirate hat into the ring to win a prize via a random drawing.

For CHEWED UP BY THE JUNGLE (Dig Site Mystery Book 3–released October 22, 2025), after you share a review I will mail you a book swag gift and add your name to the prize drawing. (Note: One book swag gift per person.)

This review crew reward drawing may happen monthly, quarterly, or whenever a new book is released.

October Newsletter PART 2 … a new book for you!

When I was prepping to write the third book in the Dig Site Mystery series, I thought I’d try to write a shorter book than usual.

(My usual is about 120,000 words.)

Yeah. Right. Sometimes I think that I sniffed too much paint as a kid.

(That would certainly help explain these character voices in my head that like to weave together multiple plotlines while telling their stories.)

It turned out that I did NOT write a shorter book. In fact, this latest in the Dig Site Mystery series is one of my longer tales, and I added some fun extras that I haven’t included before in my other books.

(Experimenting with different story elements and styles is what keeps writing exciting for me.)

You’ll see what I mean when you read Chewed Up by the Jungle.

Another book down … and a lot more to come!

Can you believe I’m almost 40-books-old in author age?

(Actually, if you count the other books I wrote prior to publishing my first, I’m over 40, but those were all practice runs.)

For a girl who didn’t want to be an archaeologist because there was too much writing involved, I seem to enjoy pecking away at a keyboard.

(Although these days, I am trying to spend more time with my family, too.)

I also enjoy drinking beverages while I write. For my birthday, I often line up various drinks to have throughout the day.

(This has become such a thing that my daughter made me a cool wooden drink carrier for Mother’s Day this year so that I can carry 4 drinks to my office at once. FOUR. Ha! I love the way her gift-making mind works.)

I’m always looking for fun new drinks

(Especially non-alcoholic ones so that I can write coherently while sipping, LOL.) 

When you finish reading through this short newsletter, I’d love it if you replied and let me know some drinks you enjoy (alcoholic or not).

(I learned about several new candy mixes after the last newsletter. Thank you to ALL who wrote to me and shared your favorites.)

I have to be honest with you about something that is often a tad controversial.

What does that mean in non-author speak?

It means this baby is almost ready to share with all of you readers. Yay!

I spent this month catching up on bookkeeping, (groan, curse, kick and scream), shipping out the Hip Deep in Bad Company audiobook to the Kickstarter supporters (with Sam’s help–woo hoo!), and reading through the first two books in the Dig Site series to make sure my final editing round on Book 3 would make the story sparkle like a disco ball (and keep you binge-readers happy-spappy).

Next month is going to be busy with awesome treats and no tricks!

* Chicken Noodle took her first flying lesson and LOVED it. I’m not sure my heart can handle what comes next, but her future looks to involve flying high.

* Beaker is working, working, working, and saving his money to buy his first car.

* Sam just made a gorgeous flagstone path from our back door out to my office that makes me feel like playing hopscotch when I go back and forth between the house and “work.”

* I went clothes shopping for my next Deadwood-related event and am so glad that Macy’s has mirrors in the dressing rooms that make you look taller and thinner. Lordy, I loathe clothes shopping … unless it’s for more work clothes (aka pajamas).

Sam Lucky at the keys …

Things have been happening around here lately, a passing breeze, a flash in the corner of my eye when glance behind me in an attempt to catch sight of the blur and quiet flurry that moves about in the house. Papers flutter on my desk in its wake, curtains sway. Occasionally, if I listen carefully, there is a faint buzzing, or cheeping, maybe a yatter, at the edge of my senses as the phenomenon occurs. It reminds me of the Star Trek episode in which a group of aliens commandeers the Enterprise to use as a vessel to take them home, wherever that is. The aliens move so quickly that Captain Kirk and his crew can’t see them, they only hear buzzing, as if insects have invaded the ship. It’s like that. It was distressing for them, and it’s disconcerting to me.

It’s Ann, of course, busting her butt to finishing up the third book in her Dig Site Series, Chewed Up by the Jungle. It wouldn’t be such a brouhaha but for the fact that we are also preparing to set sail for Deadwood for a few book signings and talks. You can catch her there on Thursday, September 21st, at the Rapid City Public Library; then Friday, September 22nd for a History on the Lawn talk at the Adam’s House – Undertaking: a History of Coffin Joints, then Saturday the 23rd for a book signing at Chubby Chipmunk Hand Dipped Chocolates (YES, it happens to be her birthday and NO, it’s not just by chance).
