Author Ann Charles Has A New Hardcover Collector’s Edition!

Something special for fans of Ann Charles’s Deadwood Mystery series; Nearly Departed in Deadwood has been released in a special collector’s hardcover edition!

1. Congratulations on the release of this special edition of Nearly Departed! Will other books in the Deadwood series follow suit? I love that idea, but the truth is, we have to see how well this first book goes over with readers and retailers. With thirteen more books currently in this series and many more to come, putting all of the books in hardcover would be a big endeavor. In the meantime, keep your fingers crossed this edition is popular with readers.

2. What inspired this blend of fiction/ non-fiction, past/present you create in your novels? I honestly don’t know. When I first started writing, I wrote a romantic fiction story. The second book included history—a romantic fiction story set at a fictional Maya archaeological dig site on the Yucatan Peninsula. The third book was set on multiple real archaeological sites in Mexico and was a blend of romance, history, and mystery. By the eighth book, I added supernatural elements, which opened up so many more opportunities for history, folklore, mythology, and more. And so it went—each book blending in more genre elements, exploring various themes, including bits of true history along with fiction to make the stories richer and the characters seem more real. This storytelling journey keeps shifting slightly with each story, and I think this is what keeps me writing. I’m excited to see what comes next!

3. Tell me about your protagonist Violet Parker.  What drives her? First and foremost, Violet is a single mother. She loves her children and needs to provide for them and protect them. In Nearly Departed in Deadwood, someone is kidnapping little girls in the small town of Deadwood, where she has recently settled with her two kids. When she finds out that her daughter fits the victims’ profiles to a T, she starts out just like any parent—nervous, worried, watchful for anything that seems suspicious. But as the story continues, Violet’s concern turns into curiosity, and she becomes entangled in the mystery with the hope of finding whoever is nabbing little girls before her own daughter goes missing.

4. Where will your readers find  Violet Parker next? Well, book 14 in Violet’s Deadwood Mystery Series was released at the end of 2024. I have a few books from other series to release this year, but Violet will be back in 2026 in book 15, an another wild and exciting story full of hilarity and chills. BEHIND THE SCENES (Episode 1): Brainstorming Partners

I decided to start this series of posts with brainstorming partners. Some authors create and write in isolation from beginning to end. I’m NOT like those authors. I often seek out thoughts and ideas from a few key sources to help me nail down “what comes next” in a story. This is where brainstorming comes into play, but I’m picky on who I knock brains with because this is an intimate thing for me–like giving someone the backdoor key to my story brain.

What a wild ride 2020 has been so far! We certainly are living in interesting times. One has to wonder if it is better to live when the “machine” is chugging along without a hitch or when springs and sprockets are flying every which way.

Here in the mountains of Northern Arizona, we are keeping our heads down and staying busy with part-time in-class schooling for our kids, online adventures, and brainstorming/plotting more stories.

I hope you are staying healthy and keeping busy, as well as finding books, movies, series, outside work, and more to keep your mental and emotional spirits lifted during these crazy times. Meanwhile, my office keeps getting messier and messier, and Mr. Lucky’s outside to-do list is filling pages on its own. Fall in Arizona is a great time to get outside and paint, build, drink beer, swing in a hammock, stare up at the starry sky with a telescope, read a book … well, you can see why we aren’t getting much of that painting and building done.

I’ve been busy lately shooting “live” videos and plan to have a lot more fun online this fall with those of you who want to join me.

Shooting the Sh*t with Ann & Robyn

A good friend of mine, NYT and USA Today Bestselling Author Robyn Peterman, and I have a blast when we are together either in person or on the phone. During one late night phone call, we decided it might be fun to hang out together online and talk about life and writing and whatever else comes to mind while “live” on Facebook to enjoy more interaction with our readers and friends. From the start, we didn’t want this to be the typical “author interview” type of show. We wanted it to be more like we’re sitting at a cafe or bar while we share stories and laughs with each other and anyone who wants to hang out with us virtually. Viewers can comment and join in the discussions if they want, or just watch and enjoy. We decided to call our show: Shooting the Sh*t with Ann and Robyn, and the first two shows are available to view on my YouTube channel if you want to check them out.

We had a great reception to the first two shows and are in the midst of planning the next couple. We are thinking we’ll do a live broadcast once a month. The next show (October) we’ll have special guest, Renee George (cozy paranormal mystery author and our good friend). Online Book Signing: In August, I tried my first “live” book signing on Facebook and it was a blast! I plan to have another online book signing this fall. Stay tuned for dates. (I’ll put this on my calendar of events, too.)

How does an online book signing work? Viewers ordered an autographed print book through my Ann Charles Store on my website, they let me know what they wanted me to write and to whom, and then I signed their books online while they watched/commented, chatting back and forth with them a little while I signed.

Whew! We made it through another holiday season and now it’s time for Sam and me to get our buns back to work. Our kids are still attending school at home via the internet. I think they are more than ready to escape from hanging out with their parents day after day. Sam and I are ready to stop having eavesdroppers listening in to our “office gossip” in the company kitchen, too. It makes it hard to discuss potential birthday presents for Beaker and Chicken Noodle when we have to use codewords and sign language–neither of which I’m any good deciphering.

In other news, we are busy planning this summer’s Ann Charles Fan Party in Deadwood at the end of June. For those of you who are considering hopping in a car or plane or train to come spend a long weekend in the Black Hills of South Dakota, check out what we have planned so far below.

Deadwood Undertaker Series Audiobook NOW Available

Sam Lucky and I are thrilled to share with you the audiobook versions of the first two books in the Deadwood Undertaker series narrated by the very fun and talented Jason Culp. Apple Butter Recipe from Dmitry of the Deadwood Undertaker Series

Starting this month I’ll be including a fun recipe for you from my 2020 Ann Charles MOON THE COOK cookbook that Mark and Michelle Davis helped me create.

This cookbook sold out last fall, so for those of you who were unable to buy a copy from my Ann Charles online store before it was gone, now you’ll have access to some of the great recipes via my monthly newsletters.

This month, Mark and Michelle chose to share the Apple Butter recipe from Dmitry at The Dove (from the Deadwood Undertaker books).

2021 Deadwood Fan Party in the Works!

For those of you interested in coming to my 2021 Deadwood Fan Party this summer from June 24-27th, we are in the process of setting up times and dates and details.

So far, we have the following lined up:

• Friday: Book signing at Chubby Chipmunk Hand-dipped Chocolates (Yummmm, so many chocolate delights!)
• Saturday: Book Signing at Lead/Deadwood Arts Center–inside the Historic Homestake Opera House (see the cover of BETTER OFF DEAD IN DEADWOOD)–in Lead (A great place to see local art and enjoy the beautiful century-plus year-old Opera House.)
• Saturday Evening: Fan Party at the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center (Lots of free parking available and just a short walk from downtown Deadwood.)
• Sunday: Book Signing at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center (A wonderful museum to explore and learn all about the Open Cut and the Homestake Gold Mine.)

IF YOU NEED TO RESERVE A HOTEL ROOM, you should know that the All-School Reunion for Deadwood and Lead will be the same weekend as the fan party, so hotels are filling up. I don’t know about you, but I am very happy to see spring this year. Winter seemed to go on and on, making me want to hit my head on the keyboard repeatedly.

Where we live in Arizona, the arrival of spring means warm windy days and cold clear nights. I can’t tell you how many times the shade umbrella on my porch has ended up in the backyard thanks to a crazy blast of high desert air whipping through our yard. Our cats and kids are bursting at the seams to head outside and soak up some invigorating sunshine. Me? I’m trying to focus on getting more words on the page as Deadwood 12 fills my head.

In other news, we are busy nailing down details for this summer’s Ann Charles Fan Party in Deadwood at the end of June. Free Jeopardy Sticker for Your Collection!

This spring, I have a fun sticker to share with you: The official Jeopardy show question starring the Deadwood Mystery series.

I had no idea I was going to be a question on Jeopardy. I was at my day job at the time (Technical Writing was my profession before I quit to write full-time) when my mom called late in the work day and said, “You’re on Jeopardy!” I said, “No, Mother, I’m at work. I think I would know if I were on Jeopardy.” We went back and forth a few times before she sighed in exasperation at my lack of intelligence and explained that her friends from over on Eastern Standard Time had called to tell her that “Ann” was on Jeopardy as a question. Needless to say, I spent the next few hours telling everyone I could to watch Jeopardy and had one friend take a picture of their television. This picture is what we used for the sticker, which explains why it’s a little crooked and you can see a reflection under the word “NOVELS.”

Here is a little bit about Ran: Shooting it RAW is a podcast created and hosted by me, Ran Elfassy. The point is to keep finding interesting people who can share a little about how they see the world and what makes them tick. We start with some photos and then see where we end up.

The name comes from digital photography and how RAW files are the unprocessed images coming from the camera sensor. Although the phrase is from photography, the show isn’t purely about how to make beautiful pictures. The podcast can be traced back to when Sony held a contest on the NatGeo channel. Along with a few others, Sony picked me for a feature in a commercial. They did it because I was in the middle of a 350-week-long performance called 350 Rans. https://www.shooting-it-raw.com/

1.    Why did you decide to be a financial planner?

I’ve always been good at dabbling with numbers. Helping people make more money comes easy for me. Financial planning is relatively uncomplicated, unlike ghosts … and the opposite sex.

2.    Has there ever been a significant other in your life?

There have been a few women here and there over the years. But in retrospect, I’ve always kept my distance. Until I moved to Deadwood.

3.    Is marriage in your future?

I don’t know. I’m a medium, not a fortune teller.

4.    Speaking of your medium abilities, have you ever met anyone else like you?

I’ve met several mediums, but our skills vary. To date, I have yet to meet a medium who senses ghosts the way I do.

5.    Do you want kids?

Being a father is not something I’ve sought due to the obstacles that result from my so-called “gift.” However, that doesn’t mean I’m averse to the idea of raising children.

6.    Does Cooper make a good roommate?

Well, he hasn’t shot me so far, so I’d say it’s a good start.

7.    What’s Cooper’s first name?

If I tell you that, I’ll have to change my previous answer.

8.    Do you have any juicy gossip about Cooper to share with all of the Cooper fans out there? Does he talk in his sleep or mention any particular female?

You’re trying to get me shot, aren’t you? Let’s see, juicy gossip … well, contrary to what Violet believes, he really is just a regular guy. He drinks his coffee black and whiskey neat, likes to talk about muscle cars and motorcycles, sucks at poker, and hits the bullseye at the shooting range every damned time. I don’t know if he talks in his sleep, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he sleeps with one eye open like an old-time gunslinger. As for the female population, besides his ongoing irritation with my girlfriend, he doesn’t kiss and tell, and I don’t ask.

9.    Okay, let’s take a break from Detective Cooper and get back to you. What are some of your favorite movies?

Off the top of my head, the original Planet of the Apes, To Kill a Mockingbird, Ravenous, and Blazing Saddles.

10.What or who was the most interesting ghost experience you’ve had to date?

Prudence from the Carhart house has been the most interesting—and the most unnerving. The first time I traded places with Prudence, she knocked the wind out of me. No ghost has ever pulled me in that deep before.

11.What traits do you look for in a partner?

Someone who has a strong will, laughs easily, is genuine and accepting. You know, the typical executioner with blonde curly hair and plenty of curves.

12.Where do you see yourself a year from now?

Like I said, I’m not a fortune teller. But I will tell you that with all of the bizarre mysteries Violet keeps getting sucked into, I’m guessing I’ll still be right here with her, holding on for dear life.
